SHOULD YOU SHAVE YOUR DOG?
Summer is just around the corner and you may be weighing in on this question.  It may seem practical to shave your water-loving dog, both to keep it cool and to cut down on coat maintenance, but you may be doing more harm than good.  Some breeds that are normally trimmed on a regular basis, such as Poodles, Portuguese Water Dogs and Bichon Frises, have hair that grows extremely quickly.
Shaving them short has little effect.
Other dogs, however, need their coat to provide insulation from heat and cold and to protect the skin from the sun.  They include the various retriever breeds, Otterhounds, Newfoundlands, Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes and German Shepherd Dogs.  If their coats are shaved, they grow back slowly, in patches, or sometimes not at all.  This can be a real problem because dogs , unlike humans, have the ability to raise and lower their hair shafts according to the temperature around them.  This allows them to either trap warmth or cool themselves.  "It's like a louvered window" and when you shave those kinds of coats, they can't adjust to the temperature around them.
